Meet Montana Jazz Artist

Ernan Cortes

Soprano, alto and tenor saxophonist, Ernan Cortes, honed his skills in Latin, funk, jazz, pop and classical situations in East Los Angeles before migrating to Billings, Montana. This jazz artist caught the attention of Billings jazz fans with searing solos alongside trumpeter Maynard Ferguson in a concert performance at the Alberta Bair Theater.

Similar concerts followed, and soon thereafter, Ernan became a first call reedman. Ernan has played with such luminaries as Kevin Mahogany, Brandon Fields, Ndugu Chancler, Roseanne Vitro, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra and Bill Yeager of the LA Jazz Workshop.

Ernan plays throughout Montana in several groups, often as a leader. His approach is brave and intense, often using lightning-speed arpeggios to form sheets of sound. Ernan appears regularly on “Jazz Night” at the Carlin martini bar & grill in Billings, Montana accompanied by his group ECQ, the Ernan Cortes Quartet.
